LeJuane "El'Ja" Bowens

LeJuane (El’Ja) Bowens is an award-winning spoken word artist, poet, speaker, and author. El'Ja Bowens has done work with the John Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts along with featuring at many festivals including the National Folk Festival, Big Ears Festival, and Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival. He is the coach of the Detour Slam Team in Fayetteville, NC which ranked 4th in the nation at the 2023 Southern Fried Poetry Festival and he has featured on Poetry Slam Inc and All Def Poetry on YouTube. He also hosts Nerd Slam competitions at numerous comicons across the US.

  • Workshop:The Superhero Anti-Hero Villain Workshop

    The S.A.V. Writing Workshop is a creative writing workshop that engages students on their creativity and challenges them to decide whether they are superheroes, villains, or antiheroes.

    Duration: 60 minutes

    Grade Level: Middle School, High School

    Maximum Number of Students: 30

    Maximum Number of Performances: 3

    Technical Requirements:

    • Cleartouch TV with HDMI adapter
    • Microphone if needed

    NC Essential Standards: NC Essential Standard SL.3.1 (Participate in communicative exchange) and NC Essential Standard SL.3.2 (Identify words that describe key ideas or details from written texts read aloud or information presented graphically, orally, visually, or multimodally.)

    Cost: $500 - one program / $1,000 - two programs (same school, same day) ($400 for each additional workshop added within that day)

  • Residency: Poetry 101

    Poetry 101 is a residency writing workshop that will teach students some basic elements of what is used when creating poetry/spoken word along with a creative writing workshop that will help them structure their poem.

    Duration: 60 minutes

    Grade Level: Middle School, High School

    Maximum Number of Performances: Depends on what is needed from school

    Technical Requirements:

    • Cleartouch TV with HDMI adapter 
    • Microphone if needed

    NC Essential Standards: NC Essential Standard 5.A.1.2 (Evaluate how intended meanings are conveyed through formal and informal productions.) and 5.CU.1.1 (Understand how theatre arts have affected, and are reflected in, the culture, traditions, and history of the United States.)
