Doug Berky Theatre

Doug Berky’s performances combine several classic theatre forms: mime, mask theatre, circus arts, & storytelling. His training includes a B.A. in Drama from Furman University, study at the Dell Art School of Mime and Comedy and an apprenticeship with mime artist, Tony Montanaro. Before beginning his solo career in 1983, Doug toured with Two Penny Circus, Montanaro Mime Theatre and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. He has appeared on the award-winning children's TV series, See-Saw & four TV specials for Swedish National Television. Doug has been a featured performer & teacher at the Eugene O'Neill Symposium, Commedia School in Denmark, Roanoke College, and schools for the deaf.

  • Assembly Performance: GEMS: THE WORLD'S WISDOM

    Doug Berky uses classic styles of storytelling from many cultures including masks, mime, puppetry and the power of a good story to introduce a collection of wisdom stories from around the world. These stories will inspire students' laughter and reflection while introducing them to literature from other cultures including Greece, India, Native America, and tales from Europe and South America. In-person or virtual.

    Duration: 45-50 minutes

    Grade Level: Pre-K, Elementary School

    Maximum Number of Students: PreK-1st: (300-350); 2nd-5th (400) *Please ask if your number exceeds these guidelines.

    Maximum Number of Performances: 2

    Technical Requirements:

    • Artist will supply sound; electrical outlet near stage
    • Clear, clean performance area 20′ wide x 15′ deep x 12′ high
    • No audience sharply to the sides or behind the performance area

    NC Essential Standards: Theatre Arts K.C.1.4.C.1 Use movement, voice and writing to communicate ideas and feelings K.C.1.1 Use non-verbal expression to communicate movement elements 4.C.1.1 Use a variety of postures, gaits and mannerisms to express character in the presentation of stories 4 C.1.2 Apply appropriate vocal elements of volume, pitch, rate, tone, articulation and vocal experession to various types of literature and storytelling 5.C.2 Use performance to communicate ideas and feelings // English Language Arts L.3.4 Determine and/or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies: context clues, word parts, word relationships, and reference materials L.3.5 Demonstrate understanding of nuances in word meanings.

  • Assembly Performance: No Show

    A performance has been scheduled, but the actor fails to show. Or does he? What will happen when a lone spectator finds himself unwittingly on stage? Experience masterful mayhem and Doug’s comical attempts at riding a unicycle and juggling, and his transformation into several hilarious characters from a gorilla to a ballerina as he explores the props and masks he finds on stage. Students experience a variety of theatre forms: mime, mask theater, circus arts, and storytelling. In-person or virtual.

  • Workshop: THE MAGIC OF MASK THEATRE

    EXPLORING COMMUNICATION AND COOPERATION WITH MASKS.

    Older students focus on physical and vocal exercises to help understand how we communicate. Theatre games & exercises are used to teach observation skills, communication skills and development of imagination and improvisation skills. Theatre and masks are used as a tool to explore literature & character through interactive exercises. Younger students use physical theatre games to discover the language of movement, ways we communicate without words, and silent ways to understand and cooperate with one another.

    Duration: 60 minutes

    Grade Level: Middle School, High School
