Embodied by Bobbe Garcia

theartscouncil

When Bobbe Garcia moved back to Fayetteville, she knew that she wanted to engage with the local arts community. The Arts Council was one of her first stops in making this connection. “As a teacher and being from here, I already knew about the Arts Council, but I didn't really fully understand a lot of the opportunities that they offered,” expressed Garcia. “I realized that there were not only grants, but the [local] artist spotlight gallery was an option to apply for.”

After submitting the application, a spur of inspiration led her to printing a collection of works that would turn into her exhibit, Embodied. This exhibit features mixed media prints, showcasing different materials in gelli printing, such as collage, bookmaking and drawing techniques. Bobbe uses limited color palettes, layers and organic shapes from foliage and flowers to create an image that represents her explorative journey of transformation. Using the natural world as an embodiment of a human experience.

“I didn’t want to do faces. I didn’t want to do representational emotions. I wanted something to feel almost feminine and light in layers,” reflects Garcia as she describes the exhibit’s inspiration. This layered approach to the works is one that she relates to her own transformational journey, and hopes that it resonates with others. “Healing and the journey that I’ve gone through, which I know can be relatable to a lot of people, specifically women; there’s layers to this.”

Embodied is on display in our Local Artist Spotlight Gallery through March 28th.
